The Cubbon Park Canines were the first squad to be formed in Bengaluru, followed by the Cunningham Canine Squad. Presently, there are 63 additional squads in the city. On World Animal Welfare Day, Bangalore Times sheds light on the city’s numerous groups comprising members who have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of animals, particularly those that are often neglected. These groups form a safety net for animals according to Priya Chetty-Rajagopal, the founder of Bengaluru's canine squads. She mentions that members of these groups go above and beyond to assist voiceless animals. These groups act as the watchful eyes and ears for dogs, and the community consistently comes together to address issues. The primary objective is to share knowledge and empower individuals to care for animals. Many people are unsure how to handle abandoned or injured dogs, which is why these groups aim to educate the public. Mallika Ghosh, a member of the CV Raman Nagar Canine Squad, regularly disseminates a list of essential emergency contact numbers to raise awareness. Canine squads establish local communities for animal care and guardianship, emphasize crucial matters such as neutering and anti-rabies vaccination, promote community engagement in animal welfare, nurture a sense of community and trust, collaborate with authorities like BBMP, State Animal Welfare Board, and police, and share knowledge and best practices on neutering, abuse, rescue, and cruelty. Parvathi Prabhakar, a member of the Sadashivanagar Canine Squad, took the initiative to neuter around 400 dogs during the pandemic, addressing the issue of abandoned dogs caused by false rumors and inactive animal birth control programs. She shares that we consider neutering to be the sole solution to this issue.
